Voters should legalize alcohol sales
Larry Rogers’ March 4 letter painted a very good picture of the wet vs. dry battle I witnessed in Irving, Texas, several years ago.
We faced repeated wetdry elections accompanied by endless rhetoric from supporters of both sides (vicious name-calling, etc.).
Finally, the city fathers OKed the sale of liquor within the city and found that the revenue kitty gained weight and the number of drinkers that, for years, had been buying and consuming liquor outside their home city now spent a lot of money in Irving.
The number of DWIs and the amount of litter brought back to Irving and thrown onto our streets and yards (yes, yards) decreased.
These items saved the police and sanitation departments many dollars and left our city a safer and cleaner place. It took a bit of time to realize and admit that the benefits far outweighed any “problems” that might be brought about by the local sale of liquor.
Dusty Wise and Y’s Hometown Foods deserve our support in this effort.
