Bears win 2 of 3 on diamond
The Brownsboro Bears opened the Athens tournament with two wins, and closed with a loss, in games held on March 12 and 13.
The sole loss was a late-inning, one-run loss, while one of the wins was by six runs and the other was by 20 in a blowout.
March 13 Eustace 4, Brownsboro 3
Brownsboro scored one run in the first inning, and another in the third, to open up an early, 2-0 lead over the Eustace Bulldogs and pitchers Scott Spearman and Jacob McCarthy combined to throw five shutout innings before things came apart.
The Bulldogs scored two in the sixth inning to tie the game and, after the Bears retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the inning, scored two more in the top of the seventh to post the winning, 4-3 score.
For the Bears, centerfielder Ryan Smith was 2 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Brad McDonald was 2 for 4 with a double. Colin Mason was 2 for .
Bret Ralson was hit by a pitch and scored a run. Jose Mendez was hit twice to get on base.
Brownsboro left 10 runners stranded on base to eight for Eustace. Spearman had four strikeouts and two walks in three innings pitched, while McCarthy had five strikeouts and one walk in four innings.
March 13 Brownsboro 9, Crandall 3
The Bears mounted a late comeback against the Crandall Pirates, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit and turn it into a 9-3 victory.
Crandall opened with a three-run first inning, then Brownsboro scored two in the third. In all, the Bears scored the last nine runs of the game.
Brad McDonald was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored. Ryan Smith was 1 for 3 with a walk, run scored and a two-run homerun in the pivotal sixth inning.
Jose Mendez was 2 for 3, was hit by pitch, and scored two runs. Bret Ralson and Brett Tidwell each scored a run in the game. Cody Davlin was hit by pitch twice and scored two runs.
Clint Cundiff had six strikeouts, walking three batters.
March 12 Brownsboro 22, Quinlan 2
The game was never in doubt as the Bears scored four in the first inning, two in the second, six runs in the fourth and 10 in the fifth as Brownsboro run-ruled the Quinlan Panthers in an opening game of the tourney.
Brownsboro scored its 22 runs on 15 hits and seven Quinlan errors.
Ryan Smith was 3 for 5 with three runs scored. Jose Mendez was 2 for 5 with two stolen bases and four runs scored. Brad McDonald was 2 for 3 with two stolen bases, a homerun, and four runs scored. Cameron Warren was 2 for 4 with three stolen bases, a homerun, and four runs scored.
Brett Tidwell was 2 for 3, hit by pitch, and a run scored. Scott Spearman was 1 for 2, with a walk, stolen base and three runs scored. Jacob Mc- Carthy was 1 for 2 with a walk and a double.
Mendez went the distance on the mound, with five strikeouts, three walks and hit one batter.
