What Will Keep Me From Going To Heaven?

Bob Sexton

This is certainly a most important question. So how does the Bible answer it?

In John 3, Jesus told the very religious man, Nicodemus, he must be born again to see or enter Heaven.

He then let him know that this happens by believing (trusting) in Jesus. Jesus then explained to Nicodemus He came into the world to save it, not judge it.

As He continued to explain, He said in John 3:18: “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

He further explained the judgment was based on the fact men loved darkness and their evil deeds rather than coming to the Light, which is Jesus.

The Bible has another account that helps answer this question. It begins in John 8:12 where Jesus said: “I am the light of the world, he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

The Jewish religious leaders basically called Him a liar. Jesus said His witness was true and He knew where He came from, and where He was going but they didn’t know either one.

After more discussion, He said in John 8:21: “I go away; and you shall seek Me, and shall die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” He added that they were from below, meaning this world, and He was from above, meaning Heaven.

Then He very plainly told them in John 8:24: “You shall die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you shall die in your sins.”

The Word of God says, rejecting Jesus, and dying in your sins will keep you from going to Heaven. My prayer is that the Spirit of God will persuade you to trust in Christ — even now — so you will not be kept out of Heaven.
