Bearettes lose two, win 15-inning game

The Brownsboro Bearettes ran their District 20-3A record to 2-2 after going 1-2 last week, losing to Farfield by one run and to Athens by six, but winning a marathon versus Westwood.

It was the Bearettes’ March 23 game against Westwood that proved to be the week’s highlight. It was a mammoth battle that had Coach James Croley e-mailing the box score in quickly with an excited note about the quality of the game.

15 innings that saw Brownsboro have a stretch of not scoring for nine innings while Westwood went eight innings without scoring at the end of the game. 15 innings that saw Bearettes pitcher Paige Goggans go the last 13 innings of the contest on the mound, giving up only one run during that stretch.

The Westwood Lady Panthers took the lead first, scoring one run in the bottom of the second inning on a oneout walk and back-to-back singles.

Brownsboro came back in the top of the fifth inning.

Maranda Goode hit a oneout double, then scored on Allison Palmer’s RBI single. Palmer moved to second base on a throw to plate. Lacey Pettit followed with a RBI single of her own and the Bearettes took a 2-1 lead.

That lead held up until the Lady Panthers’ last at-bat in the seventh inning when the Brownsboro defense got a bit sloppy. Two errors to open the inning put runners on the bases ... with the tying run scoring on fielder’s choice groundouts as Westwood scored in the inning without getting a hit to send the game into extra innings.

The score stood tied at 2-2 for seven innings, headed into the 15th. And in the top of that inning, Brownsboro opened up with a flyball out and a groundout.

Then Palmer stroked a double to right-center. Pettit legged out an infield single, moving Palmer to third. Pettit then stole second to set up a 2-RBI double by Carley Smith.

Chelsea Holcomb iced the game with an RBI single and the Bearettes had a 5-2 win.

Smith was 1 for 7 with that double and the two, gamewinning RBI. Palmer was 2 for 5 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI.

Pettit went 4 for 7 with a run scored and an RBI from her leadoff spot in the batting order. Holcomb was 1 for 5 with two walks and an RBI. Goode was 1 for 6 with a double and a run scored.

Goggans went 13 innings, striking out six and walking two. She gave up one unearned run and threw a wild pitch.
