The improvements are much needed. But many of them will affect more than just student-athletes.
John Settle, Brownsboro Independent School District’s athletic director, has a list he’s asking the Board of Trustees to approve. It includes:
•New synthetic turf for the field, replacing the grass.
“As it is now, there’s a pretty significant drainage problem,” Settle said. “And there’s about a three-anda half-foot drop from the south end (of the field) to the north.”
Superintendent Elton Caldwell said field maintenance costs the district $50,000 a year.
•The proposal includes expanding home seating by 1,360 seats, bringing the amount of seating on the home side of the field to approximately 5,000.
The seating, when completed, will stretch the home stands from 10-yard line to 10-yard line, he said.
•Move the fencing immediately behind the home stands to the west about 10 feet and asphalt the area taken inside the fence by the move.
•Build a new restroom and concession stand on the current tennis court at the northwest corner of the football field, near State Highway 31.
•Build asphalt walkways connecting the restroom and concession stand to the rest of the complex.
•Build four new tennis courts in the area between Brownsboro Intermediate School and the baseball and softball complex.
•Put in a new scoreboard. It is proposed to switch ends of the field, putting it at the north end, near State Highway 31.
•Renovating dressing rooms at the football complex.
Many of the improvements will reach those outside of the athletics program, the AD said.
“As we prepare for a possible, future bond election, this allows us to focus that bond money on the construction of new classrooms and school buildings,” Settle said.
“Generally speaking, the board’s decision is going to affect a multitude of people. It’ll help all sports and the band. Having synthetic turf means there’s always a place to practice.
“For the parents, for the fans, it means more seating, new restroom facilities, concessions — and the addition of tennis courts. This will affect and help a lot of people. I think this a great thing the school district is doing for the district.”
