Bears’ finish in second place for 20-3A

Loyd Cook Photo The Brownsboro Bears are headed to the playoffs after completing district play with an 7-3 record and an overall mark of 15-6 on the season.

Brownsboro lost it’s last two district games of the year last week, falling to Crockett at home and to Athens on the road. The losses dropped the Bears into a second place tie with Crockett, necessitating a Saturday rematch to determine playoff seeding.

The Bears won that rematch by 13 runs to advance to the playoffs as District 20-3A’s second place representative.

Brownsboro will face Mexia at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 6 in Fairfield.

Brownboro 17, Crockett 4

Brownsboro scored three runs in the first, third and fourth innings, to go along with four runs in the second inning and seven runs in the fifth inning.

The offensive explosion included home runs by four different Brownsboro players, including a grand slam by center fielder Ryan Smith.

After finishing the year tied with Crockett for second place, the win gave the Bears the second place seed as it advances to the playoffs.

Colin Mason went the distance, striking out eight Crockett batters while walking two. He gave up four runs on six hits.

Smith went 2 for 4 with a double to go along with his grand slam, three runs scored and four RBI. Cody Davlin went 3 for 4 with a double, home run, two runs scored and three RBI.

Jose Mendez went 2 for four with a home run, three runs scored, and a RBI. Bret Ralson went 2 for 4 with a home run, run scored and two RBI.

Brad McDonald went 2 for 4 with three runs scored and a RBI. Matt Tobey went 2 for 4 with a triple and two runs scored. Scott Spearman went 1 for 3 with a double, run scored and a RBI. Mason went 1 for 3 with a run scored. Brett Tidwell went 1 for 4 with a run scored.

Friday, April 23

Athens 10, Brownsboro 4

The Athens Hornets used a four-run fith inning to propel its way to a 10-4 win over Brownsboro in the last District 20-3A game of the year.

The Hornets tacked on two runs in the sixth as insurance.

Brownsboro scored one run in the first inning to take an early lead, only to see Athens come back in the bottom of the inning with two runs to take the lead. The Hornets added two more in the bottom of the third inning to expand the lead to 4-1.

But the Bears answered back in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs to tie the game at 4-4 before the Hornets broke the game open in the fifth inning.

For the Bears, Matt Tobey went 2 for 3 with a run scored and a RBI. Clint Cundiff went 1 for 2 with a double a run scored and a RBI. Scott Spearman went 1 for 2 with a walk and a run scored. Brad McDonald went 1 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base. Brett Tidwell went 1 for 4 with a run scored. Ryan Smith went 1 for 4.

Tuesday, April 20

Crockett 14, Brownsboro 3

The Crockett Bulldogs broke open a close game with a nine-run fourth inning en route to an 11-run win over Brownsboro.

Brownsboro took the first lead of the game with a run in the bottom of the second inning, then Crockett answered with a run in the top of the third inning to tie the game up.

After the Bulldogs took a 10-1 lead headed into the bottom of the fourth, the Bears scored two runs to cut the deficit to seven runs. But that would be all the scoring in the game for Brownsboro.

For the Bears, Cody Davlin went 2 for 3 with two home runs, two runs scored and two RBI. Scott Spearman went 1 for 2 with a walk, a triple and a run scored. Brett Tidwell had a walk and a stolen base. Bret Ralson had a sacrifice fly for an RBI. Jose Mendez went 1 for 3.
