The people of Brownsboro filled the gymnasium, a not-unusual occurance, except that Thursday night, the capacity came from a crowd on the gym floor and not in the stands.
It was the 2010 Brownsboro Athletic Banquet honoring the school’s athletes and success in the past year.
Brownsboro Independent School District Superintendent Elton Caldwell gave the opening remarks of the evening.
“This group, they’ve provided some outstanding moments for us, boys and girls,” Caldwell said. “They’ve been extremely competitive and have always represented us well.”
Caldwell praised the school board and BISD athletic director John Settle, thanking them for their work in bringing upgrades to the district’s athletic facilities. In particular, the superintendent noted the in-progress addition of artifical turf, concessions and restroom facilities, along with expanded seating, all at the football facility. Caldwell also noted improvements to the dressing rooms there and the coming addition of four new tennis courts elsewhere on district property.

Settle, who was the master of ceremonies, also noted the Brownsboro competitive spirit. He pointed out that 11-of-12 teams made the playoffs this year. It was a success rate that also included two district titles.
The big awards of the evening were saved for the end of the night.
Cameron Warren was tapped with the Bears Award, while Hillary Shaffer was honored with the Bearettes Award.
Justin Vause earned multiple honors at the 2010 Brownsboro Athletic Banquet held May 13. The honors included: the Academic Athlete of the Year, Fighting Heart Award (Baseball), and the Coaches Award (football). Loyd Cook Photo
The Letterman Award was shared between Warren and Tyler Rogers. Justin Vause was the recipient of the Academic Athlete of the Year.
Settle said that 19 Brownsboro athletes were named to the All-State Academic team and that the football team had seven on that list, the most of any Class 3A school in the state. There were also 44 BISD athletes on Academic All- District teams, he added.
Settle said many of the things that get done around the program come with a “lot of help behind the scenes from a lot of people.”
“They are the people behind the scenes, the few who do so much,” he said.

Settle said there were too many for him to be able to name them all, but highlighted the efforts of Rhnea Barnes and Tracy Delagarza, saying they deserved special thanks.
And the coaching staff of BISD was introduced.
“We sometimes spend a lot of time with your kids at the expense of our kids,” Settle said in giving his staff recognition.
The banquet ran more than two-and-a-half hours as athletes from 12 different sports were recognized, along with those students participating in the school’s athletic trainers program and those in cheerleading.
