WRITER’S CORNER

MEMORIAL DAY

He asked, “What does Memorial Day mean to you?”

I told him I couldn’t answer in just a word or two.

It wouldn’t be fair to all these brave men

Who gave their lives to protect us from a dictator’s sin.

What does Memorial Day mean to me?

It means I can live in a country that is free.

Because these men joined and fought and died,

We are free to work, enjoy and live our lives.

A country that forgets its dead and fallen men

Will not survive and will disappear like the wind.

They died so we could enjoy the freedom we have;

Enjoy our families, own our homes, play and laugh.

These brave men put their lives on hold

To save us from living under rules of Hitler or Tojo.

They went around the world to fight Saddam

So we could enjoy our ultimate freedom.

So every time I think about this day,

I just have this to say:

If we fail to honor the ones who gave,

Our freedom, our country, will not be saved.
