Marine League forms Tyler chapter

Staff Reports

TYLER — The Rose City Detachment No. 1354 Marine Corps League has been chartered with more than 38 members, according to a press release.

The charter was presented by The Marine Corp League’s national vice commandant, Ken Waterson, who was escorted by Harry Bruce, commandant, Department of Texas.

A number of retired and honorably discharged Marines and Navy FMF Corpsmen live in the Tyler region. Local charters such as the Rose City Detachment are community-oriented organizations with the mission of rendering assistance to current and former Marines and FMF Corpsmen, their widows, and orphans.

“I’ve been affiliated with the Marine Corps League for many years, and I can’t tell you how humbled and honored I am to serve in the capacity of commandant,” Larry G. Adkins said. “It’s an organization filled with men and women dedicated to serving the community and achieving and contributing productively to our communities.

“When the word gets out that we’ve chartered a local detachment, we expect many more willing individuals will join to help us with our mission.”

In tribute to Marine Corps values, chapters work to benefit charitable organizations, provide guest speakers for flag and patriotic presentations in schools and establish scholarships.

The Rose City Detachment meets on every third Tuesday, at 7 p.m., at Hebron Baptist Church in Tyler.

Elected officers include Adkins; David L. Garred, senior vice commandant; Richard D. Lane, junior vice commandant; John B.”Jack” Clephas, judge advocate; Darin S. Smith, Adjutant; Mike Fatherree, paymaster; Douglas M. Haning, chaplain; and Barry Kerner, sergeant-atarms.
