The Henderson County Master Gardeners has scheduled a free workshop for today in Ben Wheeler.

“It is an excellent way to get you started on the road to success,” a press release said. “The workshop will be presented by Jim Bundscho, manager of the Ben Wheeler community garden and Education Center on FM 279 in Ben Wheeler.”

The event is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Bundscho is a man “who lives to teach and share, has total respect for the environment, and says he can fix anything that’s been broken.”

He moved to East Texas from Houston, where he had worked to help create that city’s largest farmers market, and worked with the Montgomery County Ag Extension Office in Conroe designing and installing drip irrigation systems, as well as rainwater collection systems.

Bundscho will take workshop participants through steps he used to create this garden from scratch.

The steps will begin with the elimination of grass at the site, recommendations for soil testing, and will include his method of irrigation, fertilizing, bed formation, composting, use of compost, trenching, planting with seed and transplants, spacing, pest control, harvesting and successive planting.

The Master Gardeners will serve cold squash soup made from the community garden vegetables, as well as some raw vegetable treats to be dipped in a homemade crudite.

In addition, Nina Ellis of the Master Gardeners will help Bundscho create a demonstration garden of native plants this Fall.

This is the second workshop in the summer series. Call 903-675-6130.
