Rev. Richard Prather
This weekend is Independence celebration weekend.
Many will gather sometime on Saturday, Sunday or Monday, as families and friends to rejoice in the freedom won for us so many years ago.
The decision by the colonists to organize a movement that would result in local rule was a communal action for communal benefi t.
And that is the flavor of what we desire to happen at the Amphitheatre on the lake this and every 4th of July.
We at Lake Palestine United Methodist Church are privileged to have the facilities in which to celebrate Independence Day with real gusto, including one fantastic fireworks show.
We sincerely desire that our community enjoy the extravaganza with us, and we pray we all view this as an event hosted by the west-lakeshore community for the enjoyment of all in the immediate area.
This is the third annual 4th of July Extravaganza, and we think it will be the best yet!
We are hoping hundreds of our neighbors will be on the grounds to share the fun and excitement of independence celebration weekend at this event.
The afternoon activities will begin at 4 p.m. with a 42 tournament in the Family Life Center at Lake Palestine United Methodist Church.
The rest of the activities begin at 5 p.m., followed by entertainment, face painting, horseshoes, watermelon-eating-contest and karaoke.
Some really great items will be available through a silent auction.
Parking, hot dogs, drinks, snow cones and inflatables will have a small charge to help cover costs, but for the most part, the intent is to provide for the family outdoor celebration activities without having to hand over significant amounts of money.
For a small fee, you will also have a chance to “score a goal” through the spongethrow at a local pastor or celebrity “guarding” a soccer goal.
We give thanks to the Chandler area businesses that have provided some corporate support.
The cost of such an event is significant, and it will require generosity on the part of the community to support payment of bills yet to come.
Come early and get a good vantage point for the fireworks. Bring a blanket or lawn chair for comfort. Wear clothing you don’t mind getting a bit wet if you want to participate in the water activities.
And most of all, bring a neighbor or friend and enjoy an evening of fun with your community. See you there!
