3 properties leveled in Chandler, 3 others also to be demolished

CHANDLER — Three properties here have been leveled as part of the city’s code-enforcement program, and three others are scheduled to be destroyed before the season ends.

“It’s been a good program for us,” city administrator Jim Moffeit said. “We’ve cleaned up a lot of uninhab- itable houses.

“Now, we’re working with some of these owners with assistance to build new houses.”

Since June, a property at 619 State Highway 31 West has been demolished, and two others on Farmto Market Road 2010 near SilverLeaf have been taken down.

Three more — on Noonday Road, at 5th and Cherry streets, and in the Cade addition have been targeted.

“Three of those are fairly large houses,” Moffeit said.

The city is entering its third year of a contract with Sanitation Solutions of Paris, which allows that company to demolish the houses. Chandler’s 2009-2010 budget allocates $7,500 for the work.

If properties aren’t up to code and cannot be salvaged, owners may ask the city to demolish them at no cost to them.

Chandler is responsible for disconnecting sewer and water hookups. Property owners must disconnect any other utilities on their lots.

Sanitation Solutions uses its equipment and manpower, and the city pays a perton fee for landfill dumping.

About 15 properties have been demolished since the program began.
