City Hall to begin roof work

CHANDLER — Work to replace more than 13,000 square feet of roof at City Hall is expected to be complete within weeks to save money on energy costs.

“It has to be done by August,” city administrator Jim Moffeit said. “East Texas Roof Works will come in and seal everything, treat rust, and then pour or paint the roof on. When it’s done, it will be white and deflect a lot of light.”

A $23,000 Energy Effi ciency and Conservation Block Grant will be used to pay for the project.

“This new roof will save us nearly $4,000 a year.”

The city’s electric bill each month is about $15,000. Ten percent of the cost comes from operations at City Hall. The Chandler Community Center, Chandler Brownsboro Area Chamber of Commerce and Chandler Police Department use the same building.

Chandler’s cut of the money comes from the Texas State Energy Conservation Office program through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Direct allocations to “entitlement” cities and counties is $163,121,800. SECO’s allocation is $45,638,100 for cities with populations under 35,000 and counties with populations less than 200,000.

SECO provides a list of over 200 items on which its grant money can be used.

Separately, city offi- cials are seeking a $25,000 Texas Commission on Environmental Quality grant through the East Texas Council of Governments for a chipper shredder. Moffeit said the machine is needed to reduce solid waste disposal.

“Right now, the waste has to be burnt and sent to a landfill by Sanitation Solutions,” he said. “It should be broken down into mulch and re-used.”

The city is also talking to Sanitation Solutions about possibly incorporating a limited recycling program, he said.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry appointed Moffeit in the Spring to serve on the East Texas Regional Review Committee.

As part of the East Texas Council of Governments, the committee administers community development block grants through a points system based on poverty and unemployment rates, per-capita income, and funding in previous application cycles.

Moffeit replaced Don Copeland of Chandler on the committee. Its members serve terms “at the pleasure of the governor.”
