Sales-tax revenues for July ‘solid’

A solid July in sales-tax revenues has the area remaining slightly ahead of last year’s pace.

The 16 county municipalities collecting the sales tax combined for more than $800,000 in revenues in July, an 8.03-percent increase compared to July last year.

And for the year-to-date, more than $5.5 million in sales-tax revenues have streamed into the collective coffers of the municipalities.

That is 3.79 percent more than at the same point in 2009.

Chandler’s return was up 3.11 percent for the month, but that city remains about 4.55 percent behind 2009’s pace.

So far in 2010, Chandler has $232,026.32 in salestax revenues. That’s down from $243,112.13 at the same point in 2009.

Brownsboro posted its second consecutive month with a double-digit percentage decline in revenues. July’s return was down 11.45 percent from a year ago.

On the positive side, with total receipts of $74,434.71 this year so far, Brownsboro is nearly 5 percent ahead of last year.

Athens, the No. 1 salestax collector in the county, saw its July return increase by 6.62 percent and its yearto date total up by 4.79 percent.

The city has collected more than $2.56 million so far in 2010, up from $2.44 million at the same point in 2009.

Statistics on the salestax revenues come from a report on the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts’ Web site.

Other July numbers:

•Caney City, Coffee City and Malakoff — all cities that sell some form of alcohol — all remain ahead of last year’s collection pace.

Coffee City’s July return was double that of July last year, while its year-to-date numbers are nearly 20 percent above the same point in 2009.

•The small town of Log Cabin is 63 percent ahead of last year’s total.

Log Cabin has totaled just $15,412.73 so far in 2010, but had a total just slightly more than $9,400 at the same point last year.

•Murchison is 12.6 percent above last year with receipts totaling $19,908.17 so far this year. Its July check of $3,218.52 was 45.87 percent more than July last year.
