Unemployment rises in Henderson County
Unemployment numbers have risen in Henderson County, the Texas Workforce Commission reports.
Numbers for June placed the jobless rate at 8.9 percent, a half-percentage point higher than in May when it was 8.4 percent.
TWC also estimated the number of unemployed Henderson County workers at 3,208, with 32,731 residents gainfully employed.
The increase in June broke a streak of four consecutive months that saw the unemployment picture improving.
The high-water mark had been in January, when the jobless rate crested at 9.4 percent. This June’s figure was higher than June 2009, when the jobless rate was 8.6 percent, and June 2008 when the rate was 5.4 percent.
Each June of the past three years marked an upswing in the unemployment rate as the summer months of the calendar arrived.
The years of 2008, 2009, and 2010 reflect the changing economy.
In 2008, jobless rates were in the 4- to 5-percent range during the first half of the year. Last year’s numbers were in the 7-percent range during the first six months.
This year, the rate hasbeen in the 8- to 9-percent range.
July jobless numbers are expected to be released on Aug. 20.
