Series offers believers educational opportunities
Not many people I know claim to have a full understanding of any single topic (though in very specific circumstances, some seem to come close on a single topic).
And after more than 35 years of study, I can comfortably say I still have much to learn about the Bible, its teachings, its translations, and its applications to my life and the lives of those immediately around me.
If someone claims to know all they need, I will simply pray for them. Sharing what understandings we have from our experiences with those around us will help all who participate in this sharing, including the one who shares.
It is in this line of thinking that I want all our readers of The Statesman to know two study courses are being planned at Lake Palestine United Methodist Church.
Neither study is one that will be guided by specific denominational dogmas or teachings, but rather a broad, interfaith leadership that plainly asks the participants to explore their understandings of various topics.
The first course is part of the Disciple Bible Study series. It is a thorough reading of the Old and New Testament scriptures beginning in September and ending in May.
The weekly study is built around a small group format where personal impressions received in the daily readings are shared in a facilitated discussion and guided by an interdisciplinary video presenter.
This study assumes the Bible is the key to renewal in the church, and the written divine word provided for us is one medium through which God speaks truths to us.
Each student is asked to be open to being examined by the scriptures and transformed by the encounter of this study. The objective of having a deeper understanding of self, and scripture encourages and supports a fuller and more meaningful discipleship in the local church.
The second course is an exploratory study. Whereas the Disciple Bible Study assumes a Christian background of some kind, the Alpha Course explores the meaning of life in a relaxed and friendly setting, building from discussions started by a brief video.
This 10-week study promotes an atmosphere where no question about life or God is seen as too simple or too hostile, such as: Is there a God? Why am I here? Where did I come from? Where am I going?
Alpha is for anyone who thinks there may be more to life than meets the eye. All backgrounds are welcome. Examples of topics frequently encountered are: the existence of God, the purpose of life, the afterlife, the claims of Jesus, and more.
Some people want to get beyond religion and find a relationship with God that changes life.
Others come for the close, long-lasting friendships built during the Alpha course.
Many guests have never been to church, others have not felt comfortable in or drawn to a worship service, perhaps because they have not understood the basics of the Christian faith. All of this is open game in this study.
The Alpha course promises to be a great way to better understand yourself, as well as some others, and the basics of the Christian faith.
The Disciple Bible Study will make someone very different when the entire study is completed. We look forward to having both of these studies operating this Fall.
The starting dates and times will be determined by the group who responds with interest.
