Earnest Lee Mapes
Earnest Lee Mapes, 70, of Lubbock died Sunday, March 3, 2013. He was born to Jack and Rubye Mapes in Anton, Texas, Dec. 18, 1943.
He moved to Lorenzo, and that is where he graduated Lorenzo High, where he played football, ran track and loved to rodeo.
After graduating, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served two tours in Vietnam, where he was a Sergeant in the 1st Bridge, 7th Engineers division.
He married his soul mate Sept. 15, 1978, Ms. Mona Averett, and spent the remainder of his years adoring his bride.
Mapes was a welder by trade, which he enjoyed, so it was more of a hobby than a career.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jackie Gerald; and sister, Jane.
Survivors include his wife, Mona; daughter, Kelli Mapes Krieg and husband, Gary; son, John Holocker and wife, Deana; two grandsons, Lukas Wyatt and Lance Weston; brother, Travis Beau Mapes and wife, Marcie; brother-in-law, Ervin Averett and wife, Lisa; sister-in-law, Kathy Adam and wife, Ron; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Pallbearers were Gary Krieg, Eric Darwin, Ron Adam and Clay Adam.
Graveside services with military honors by the Marine Corps were held in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Griffin Mortuary. Pastor Russell Kuhns of Martin Springs Baptist Church officiated.
